Hemorrhoids

pregnant woman with hand on belly

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anal canal that can cause pain, itching, and bleeding. They’re very common in the last months of pregnancy when the uterus pushes on rectal veins, and many people also get them during childbirth.

Hemorrhoids are uncomfortable, but they usually resolve on their own. Until then, try these tips for relief:

  • Drink more water and eat high-fiber foods.
  • Don’t sit for too long. Lie on your side several times a day.
  • Clean the area with moist toilet paper, witch hazel pads, or Tucks* pads.
  • Apply ice packs to relieve discomfort.
  • Take a warm (but not hot) bath for 20 minutes, several times a day.
  • Use Preparation H,* Anusol,* or 1% hydrocortisone cream to relieve pain.
