I grew up in Houston, Texas, always wanting to be a pediatrician. During medical school, though, I found that I enjoyed getting to know the whole family and taking care of all generations within them – and thus a love for family medicine was born! Growing up, I came to Colorado every summer with my family and I knew I wanted to live here as an adult. After completing medical school in Houston, my husband and I moved, and I completed my family medicine residency at Saint Joseph Hospital. I have since latched on to the Colorado lifestyle. I love running, biking (mostly road, some mountain), triathlons and skiing. My husband and I are enjoying watching our sons learn to love these sports, too.
I encourage my patients to find balance, as prevention is truly the best medicine. From birth through late adult life, healthy diet and exercise are the best prevention there is. I like to help people find a way to fit that into their lives and utilize the amazing resources that Kaiser Permanente has to offer. I'm a huge fan of physical therapy and our Complementary Medicine department for injuries and pain management, for example. I am always looking to help patients with managing their chronic pain without medications and really enjoy helping folks on chronic opiates get off of them completely. The mental connection to pain is huge and our counseling resources and classes are vital for this. When managing chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and hypertension, I help patients maximize lifestyle management and use medications as they are needed to stay at their best. With evidence-based medicine, there are certainly times that pills are the best option, and I especially encourage vaccinations for everyone since they are so safe and effective.
I thrive by spending time with my family and friends, and by setting and achieving personal athletic goals. My current sport of choice is the half marathon. My first love is the triathlon, and over the last 18 years I've competed in sprint up to half-Ironman distance races, traditional and off-road. I've also completed the triple bypass and competed in various other cycling and mountain bike races. Setting training goals ensures that I get exercise in my day, and that I can maintain my energy and balance to take care of myself, my family, and of course my patients!
