I grew up in Prague, Czechoslovakia but ultimately left the country for political reasons in the 1980’s. After a year in Austria, I followed my dream to live in the United States, resume my medical education and become a physician. I went to college and medical school in New Jersey, Boston, Massachusetts for my internship, and ultimately completed dual residency training in Neurology and Anesthesiology in Maryland. A summer road trip around the United States with my husband opened my eyes to the beauty of the Pacific Northwest; the mountains, lakes and forests, the rugged coast, and the people. After completing my fellowship training, we moved to Portland, Oregon and never looked back. My medical career has also been a journey. I spent more than a decade in academic medicine, contributing to the education of a new generation of doctors and leading a Neuroanesthesia Division. In my heart I have always been a clinician, however, and in 2014 accepted a position at Kaiser Permanente. I appreciate Kaiser Permanente’s integrated approach to patient care and emphasis on patient wellness and disease prevention.
Although my subspecialty is Neuroanesthesia; providing care for patients undergoing brain or spine surgery, I also enjoy general anesthesia for its variety. As Anesthesiologists, we must be skilled in caring for patients of all ages with a myriad of conditions. I appreciate the anesthesia care team model practiced at Kaiser Permanente and am fortunate to work alongside highly talented and hard working nurses and physicians who all share the common goal of taking good care of their patients. The time of surgery can be quite stressful for patients and their families and it is vitally important to me to connect with my patients and alleviate any anxiety they may have about their upcoming procedure. Nothing touches me more than to hear a patient say “I trust you” before heading to the operating room
The Romans used to say, “A sound mind in a healthy body”, so I, too, try to stay fit. My husband and daughter share my love for the outdoors. We enjoy hiking in the Columbia Gorge or Mt. Hood wilderness. When the weather gets cold, we cross-country ski or snowshoe. At other times, I enjoy the adrenaline rush when navigating Heather Canyon on my alpine skis or the mental relaxation of a yoga practice. These are the ways I try to balance my life between work, family and leisure.
