I am originally from Tucson, Arizona, but completed my undergraduate education and medical training in the Bay Area at the University of California, San Francisco, and at Stanford. I am happy now to be in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by my large extended family and the great outdoors. I choose medicine because I love science and physiology and because I am a huge people person. I love education and teaching; medicine is a field of lifelong learning. When the opportunity arises, I enjoy teaching patients about aspects of their health and surgical experiences.
I was introduced to Kaiser Permanente during my first post-medical-school year of training as an intern at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. There, I learned to appreciate the teamwork, compassion, and patient-centered systems that this group embodies. Kaiser Permanente helped to shape my formative first year as a physician, and for that reason I was inspired to return at the end of my medical training. I am a board-certified anesthesiologist, and I chose that field because I love alleviating people's pain. Surgery is a stressful moment in anyone's life, and I like that I can make the experience more manageable by soothing the pain after surgery. I chose to complete an additional year of fellowship in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine because I believe that nerve blocks are one of the most powerful tools anesthesiologists possess to ease post-operative pain. My additional year of training helped me hone my skills in nerve blocks and the systems that best control post-operative pain.
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.” –John Muir My husband and I thrive in the outdoors. We love hiking, camping, and kayaking. I am also a huge "crafter." Between quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, woodburning, candle making, embossing, and canning, there isn't a craft store aisle I haven't raided. I also make it a daily intention to grow in my mindfulness and meditation practice. My current favorite book is Joy on Demand by Chade-Meng Tan, the Googler who popularized meditation in the workplace. One of my professional interests is physician wellness. I presented my research on house-staff self-care at the 2016 International Conference on Physician Health.
