Acerca de mí
Welcome to my Web page! I have been at Kaiser Permanente since 1997 and practicing orthopedics since completing my residency in 1989. I spent 28 years in the United States Navy before and after medical school. In 2009, I was selected to be the chief of orthopedics. I enjoy the challenge and reward of caring for people with musculoskeletal problems both in surgery and in the clinic. It gives me a way to serve the others in the community now that my military service is finished.
I grew up in Pennsylvania farm country, just outside of Reading. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy, I volunteered for nuclear submarines duty, serving on two different nuclear attack submarines. After completing my second submarine assignment, I applied and was accepted to the military medical school in Bethesda, Maryland. During medical school I married a fellow student; we have four sons. Three of our sons are now serving in the United States Navy around the world. I continued my training at Bethesda in orthopedics and was then assigned to the Naval Medical Center San Diego. I also served in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. When I retired, I joined the orthopedic department at Kaiser Permanente.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
I have a practice in general orthopedics with Kaiser Permanente, focusing on elective shoulder and knee surgery. I am also a member of the orthopedic trauma team, providing emergency surgical musculoskeletal care. A key philosophy of my practice is the importance of sustained fitness for everyone in every stage of their life.
Cómo vivo bien
I try to keep myself physically and mentally active. I do this by mountain biking and stand-up paddle boarding on weekends, road biking during the week, rowing on an indoor rower, and skiing. I keep my mind engaged by reading every day, both medical literature and for pleasure. I enjoy books by Larry McMurtry, Jon Krakauer, Ivan Doig, Wallace Stegner, and other Western writers.
