I was born and raised on Long Island. After completing my bachelor's degree at Wellesley College, I earned a master's degree in genetic counseling at Virginia Commonwealth University. I also earned a certificate in neurodevelopmental disabilities through the Virginia Leadership Education program. My parents encouraged me to follow my passion for learning through after-school science programs, educational summer camps, and participation in sports and the arts. My sister and I also spent summers with my grandparents, who inspired us to travel and to respect different cultures. Throughout my life, I visited relatives on Oahu. When my husband and I were married in Haleiwa, we knew that we belonged in Hawaii. We were very happy to have the opportunity to settle here a few years later.
I’ve always had an interest in science. Throughout high school and college I worked and volunteered at the Dolan DNA Learning Center, a part of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. When I was in college, I discovered the world of genetic counseling. I immediately knew that this work would satisfy my twin passions for continuous learning about genetics and helping others understand their conditions. I’m an active member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and Collaborative Group of the Americas on Inherited Colorectal Cancer. In New York I was a member of the Grateful Greyhounds, a volunteer organization dedicated to greyhound adoption and rehabilitation. To stay current in my field I attend genetics conferences and specialty conferences in cancer genetics. I also participate in ongoing trainings as well as tumor board and interdisciplinary meetings within the hospital. As the first genetic counselor for the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, I’m excited to be bringing genetic counseling services to more individuals in our community. Genetic counselors provide an additional perspective to a health care team, including an understanding of an underlying inherited condition or predisposition. This can enable providers to give patients more personalized care. I look forward to knowing each of my patients. It’s very satisfying to me to learn about their individual and family histories, which help me understand their beliefs and unique perspectives.
My husband and I stay active by walking our two rescue greyhounds on the beach and around our peaceful neighborhood. It’s also important for us to unwind and spend time with our ohana. In my leisure time I enjoy gardening with my sister, who is my best friend. I also love cooking for friends and family, especially creating dishes made of home-grown produce from our garden.
