Acerca de mí
I was born in St. Louis, Missouri, grew up on Guam, and later lived in various parts of the U.S. and Europe. I earned my Bachelor of Arts at Wellesley College in Massachusettes and my medical degree at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. After a transitional internship at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, I did an emergency medicine residency at UCLA Medical Center. I'm not certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
My parents were both physicians. My father specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and my mother in Emergency Medicine. Watching their dedicaton and hard work, as well as the personal fulfillment they found in contributing to their community, inspired me to follow in their footsteps.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
When I was growing up, my strongest academic area was science, and my extracurricular activites were focused on helping others. Being a physician satisfies both of these interests-- my continuing fascination with how the human body works, while supporting people in their quests for optimal health.
The wide range of situations seen in emergency medicine and the challenge of working in a fast-paced environment drew me to this specialty. As an emergency physician I feel honored to be in a position where I can help ease people's fears and anxieties at some of their most vulnerable times.
To stay abreast of current research and recommendations in my field, I read journals and articles provided by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and participate in continuing medical education programs. My professional organization, the American College of Emergency Physicians, also provides information on the latest developments.
I decided to join Hawaii Permanente Medical Group because of the value it places on providing the full range of care, including primary, specialty, and emergency care. I also appreciate the great support services here that allow physicians to focus on taking care of patients.
My approach to care is to sit down with my patients for heart-to-heart talks in order to learn what their immediate needs and concerns are. I always try to see situations from their perspective so that they feel supported and understood.
Cómo vivo bien
Keeping up with my active boys is one way I stay physically healthy. I strive to achieve balance by exercising at the gym, going surfing, hiking, and spending time outdoors. I also enjoy reading a good book, eating healthily, working on my spiritual growth, spending quality time with my children, and keeping strong relationships with my family and friends. When I feel happy myself, I can better care for those around me.
