I was born in South Korea and moved with my family to Colorado when I was two years old. I received my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and then traveled to Hawaii for further study. I did a psychiatry internship and residency at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry. I moved to the East Coast for several years but had the chance to come back to the islands to live and work. Returning to Hawaii felt like coming home. My husband and I feel blessed to be raising our children here, surrounded by the wonderful aloha spirit and the breathtaking beauty of these islands.
I’ve always enjoyed helping people in whatever way I can. When my father had major heart surgery I became much more aware of the importance of taking preventive health measures and adopting a healthy lifestyle. A career in medicine seemed to be a way that I could make an important difference in people’s lives.
I was attracted to the specialty of psychiatry because of the emphasis it places on the role of the mind-body-spirit connection in achieving optimum health.
Attending conferences, reading professional journals, and accessing online resources help me to keep up-to-date with trends in psychiatry and other medical research. I also attend continuing education programs and consult colleagues within psychiatry and in the other medical specialties.
When I came to the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, I was excited to experience the professional collaboration among the physicians and providers. The team approach to managing health is one of the most effective ways to ensure that patients receive the best care possible.
It’s my belief that keeping balance in life, doing things in moderation, maintaining nurturing connections with others, and staying true to one’s self keep people healthy and happy. Everyone has a story that deserves to be heard. Mutual respect between doctor and patient, combined with open and honest communication, are cornerstones of a successful therapeutic relationship.
With two young children at home I’m always striving to achieve balance between work, family, and personal time in my life. My children help to keep me active, and exploring the beauty of the islands also helps me to recharge both physically and mentally. I also enjoy relaxing on the beach, paddling, spending time with my family and friends, and dining out.
