Acerca de mí

I was born in Spokane, Washington, during a massive blizzard. I spent my childhood in the Pacific Northwest, primarily in Oregon and Washington, where I developed a love for hiking in the region’s magnificent forests. I later earned my bachelor’s degree in anthropology and sociology from Mills College, an all-women’s college in Oakland, California.

 

Before pursuing my advanced degree, I served for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Central African Republic, working as a community health extension agent. During that time, I partnered with local midwives in a rural village that had no electricity or running water. The midwives told me that they would train me if I agreed to become a midwife in my country and train others one day. I attended 35 births during those two years.

 

I earned my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the Yale University School of Nursing in Connecticut. My master’s thesis was inspired by my Peace Corps experience and examined the cultural context and rite-of-passage ceremony surrounding the practice of female genital cutting in one tribe in the Central African Republic.

 

As a board-certified midwife, I’m a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the National Peace Corps Association. I’m also a National Health Service Corps Scholar, repaying my service at the start of my career on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota with the Oglala Lakota Indian Health Service.

 

My husband and I share a love of travel and adventure. He has supported my midwifery journey from my time in the Peace Corps through years of training and decades of practice. While I pursued my career, he served as the primary parent for our twin boys. Now grown, they’re forging their own paths internationally. My husband, who’s originally from landlocked Switzerland, has embraced life in Hawaii and especially enjoys the easy access to the warm tropical ocean.

 

 

Acerca de mi práctica médica

 

My midwifery practice has been colorfully influenced by the variety of settings where I’ve studied and worked, as well as the places I’ve explored. During a medical anthropology lecture I learned about home birth and midwives in the U.S. Shortly after this lecture, my aunt sent me an article about certified nurse-midwives from her nursing school alumni magazine with a note attached that said: “Jenni, do you have any interest in nurse-midwifery?” 

 

My aunt wasn’t the only one to notice my interest in midwifery. My academic advisor looked at my undergraduate course list and told me he saw a clear interest in women’s health in my future.

 

I’ve worked in a variety of settings during my long career as a midwife. In Rapid City, South Dakota and Bend, Oregon, I worked in a private practice setting on call for my clients 24/7. During my nearly five years in New Zealand, I was able to practice true physiological birth, homebirth, and waterbirth in a small quaint, quirky rural seaside town on the South Island.

 

This is my third time returning to Hawaii as a midwife. During my first experience in the islands, I worked for Kalihi-Palama Health Center, covering the maternity leave of a colleague. The midwives I worked with during that time have remained lifelong friends. I eventually worked at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii as a certified nurse-midwife for eight years, then left to become a clinical faculty midwifery instructor at Oregon Health and Science University for three years. A new position opened with Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, and I was recruited to return to the islands to work with the incredible ob-gyn department once again.

 

I’ve been published twice in Midwifery Today Magazine and have given informative talks about midwifery and the Peace Corps. It feels like the universe clearly led me to this incredible profession. I’m especially interested in contraception, pregnancy, group prenatal care, birth and menopause. I enjoy teaching in the community or formal academic settings.

 

Cómo vivo bien

 

I find joy in journaling, yoga, giving Reiki, meditation, hiking, taking long walks on the beach, Scuba diving, and watercolor painting. I look forward to family time, travel, and hanging out with my midwife buddies outside of work.
