Acerca de mí
I was born in Dallas, spent my childhood in Memphis, lived in Las Vegas during my teen years, and moved to St. Louis to pursue undergraduate degrees in biology and psychology at Washington University. For my medical degree I went to the University of Nevada School of Medicine and stayed on to do an internal medicine internship. Following that I went to Oregon Health & Science University for a dermatology residency and a pediatric dermatology fellowship. I’m now board certified in dermatology. During residency I met my significant other, who’s from Hawaii, and we moved to Oahu after I completed my training. We’ve loved living and working here ever since.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
When I was young, a biking accident got me interested in medicine and the possibility of a career as a doctor. During medical school the many possibilities in dermatology caught my attention. A dermatologist can practice as a generalist who sees patients with a wide range of skin conditions or as a specialist who focuses on one aspect of the practice, such as skin cancer. I’m particularly interested in infantile blood tumors, capillary malformations, eczema, psoriasis, and skin malignancies.
I’ve given presentations in several states around the country on skin diseases such as dermatitis in pregnancy, herpes, and skin discoloration, as well as on conditions related to kidney damage and fluid buildup in pregnancy. Also, my research articles on topics such as skin and aging, skin tumors, effects of fluoroscopic procedures, fibroids, and some rare conditions have been published in a number of medical journals.
To keep up with current medical research, I attend national conferences, read dermatology journals, participate in journal clubs, attend continuing medical education programs, and access the latest information put out by my professional organizations – the American Academy of Dermatology and the Society for Pediatric Dermatology.
When I worked with Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Oregon, I experienced a very supportive environment and a wonderful patient population. I wanted to continue with this highly regarded organization when I moved to Oahu, and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join Hawaii Permanente Medical Group.
My goal is to provide skin disease patients with the best possible care. I also enjoy talking to my patients and learning about their lives—their families, their interests, their occupations, what brought them to Hawaii, if not originally from here.
Cómo vivo bien
Being with my family is my favorite pastime. To stay healthy and fit, I hike, run, bicycle, go open-water swimming, and dabble in photography. I also find it fulfilling to take part in skin cancer awareness workshops and volunteer dermatology clinics in my community.
