I was born and raised in Honolulu. Although I went to the mainland for college, medical school, and residency, I always wanted to return home to practice medicine in the community that I love. I went to Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and did my residency in internal medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. I met my wonderful husband in college, and we’ve been lucky to be able to support and inspire each other throughout our medical training.
As a student volunteer in hospitals and medical clinics, I realized that I could make a positive difference in people’s lives as a physician. I love puzzles and problem-solving, so I was drawn to the intellectual challenges of diagnosis and treatment as an internal medicine physician. This specialty also allows me to establish long-term relationships with patients and to help them live healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives. To stay up-to-date in medicine, I attend presentations and conferences, read medical news, and discuss medical developments and unusual patient cases with colleagues. At the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, I work with a supportive team of dedicated professionals whose philosophy of care matches my own and who continually work to improve the quality of care. I also appreciate the integrated electronic medical record system, which allows for efficient and timely access to medical records and coordination among specialists. I feel privileged to be a part of my patients’ lives and strive to establish trusting relationships and open communication with them. Every patient is unique, and I love getting to know each one as an individual. By listening carefully to their life stories, I can more effectively customize their care plans. I believe that one of the best things I can do for patients is empower them to make the best decisions for their own health.
Outside of clinic, I enjoy spending time with family, cycling, gardening, and walking our family dog. I also appreciate quiet time for reading and reflection.
