I was born and raised in Hawaii as part of a large extended family. After graduating from Punahou, I attended Boston College and the University of Hawaii at Manoa before enrolling in pharmacy school at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. My husband gave me the courage and confidence to change career paths, and ultimately, I entered the University of Washington School of Medicine. I later did my residency in internal medicine under the auspices of the University of Hawaii Residency Programs in Honolulu.
While in pharmacy school I realized that I wanted to be involved in the medical field in a more comprehensive way. I wanted to be more intimately involved with "the chase” - the diagnostic hunt - and the analysis of an illness, as well as the treatment and recovery phases of patient care. This desire to be broadly involved led me to medicine as a career and to my choice of internal medicine as a specialty. I also have a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, am a registered pharmacist in Washington and Hawaii, and am board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. My professional affiliations include memberships in the American College of Physicians and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. At the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG), I practice hospital-based internal medicine and also serve as the Chief of Pharmaceutical Services. To stay up-to-date with developments in medicine and pharmacy, I make it a point to read peer-reviewed medical journals regularly. At HPMG, I like the multidisciplinary collaboration and the high standards required of HPMG associates. I also identify with the Medical Group’s core principle that our members are at the center of everything we do, as well as its emphasis on strong physician leadership. The patient is at the center of everything I do in my practice. Also critical to me are quality, practicing medicine based on current research, and disease prevention. As a hospitalist I have interactions with patients that are relatively brief yet intense, covering a lot of ground over a few days. I strive to be well-informed yet humble, thorough yet efficient, energetic yet calm, and kind yet truthful. I enjoy being at the bedside and helping patients and their families through what is often a frightening and chaotic time for them.
In my spare time I swim, read, and spend time with friends. Above all else I enjoy being a mother, which is incredibly humbling and exhilarating for me.
