After graduating from high school in my home state of Oregon, I moved to Pennsylvania for my undergraduate education. I then received my medical education at the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and did both my internship and residency in emergency medicine at East Carolina University, Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina. Later I returned to the Pacific Northwest and for a number of years worked as an emergency department physician in Washington State. But the lure of Hawaii’s beauty and culture proved too hard to resist, and when the opportunity arose to pick up and resettle on Oahu, I took the chance.
Throughout my school years I was primarily interested in science, especially how disease and injury affect the human body, so practicing as a physician is very rewarding to me. In my specialty of emergency medicine, no two days are alike. We see an endless variety of patients in various challenging situations. I love being in a position to practice so many different types of medicine.
I stay up-to-date in my field and in medicine overall by watching online podcasts, going to emergency medicine conferences in Hawaii and on the Mainland, and reading medical journals. My professional organization, the American College of Emergency Physicians, also provides me access to the latest developments and treatment recommendations.
It’s very gratifying to be part of a medical group that strives to deliver such high-quality patient care. The Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG) provides great care to patients as well as appropriate follow-up after the initial emergency department visit. At HPMG I can always feel confident that the people I’ve treated will remain in good hands as they recover from their illnesses or injuries.
In the midst of an emergency, it’s especially important for physicians to really listen to their patients to understand their most urgent needs. In these situations, I’m focused on addressing any immediate care that’s necessary, providing clear explanations about the medical condition or injury, and offering reassurances whenever possible.
To stay mentally and physically healthy, and to keep my life in balance, I spend as much time as possible with my husband doing things that we enjoy together, especially outdoor activities such as hiking, bicycling, and diving. I also like to dabble in amateur photography.
