Acerca de mí
New York was home during the first 18 years of my life. For a change of scenery, I decided to go to college in California and then to the University of Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. Following a general surgery internship and a urology residency at Tripler Army Medical Center, I did a fellowship in urologic oncology at the Mayo Clinic. Since then I’ve lived in Hawaii.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
My father had a successful career as a pharmacist, and to follow in his footsteps, I initially went to pharmacy school. During my training, I worked in a Veterans Affairs hospital on a medical ward. As I watched the physicians in their practice, I realized that this work interested me more than pharmacology, and I decided then and there to pursue medicine. I love the specialty of urology because of the challenging surgical procedures involved and the opportunity for long-term connections with patients.
I’ve presented at numerous conferences over the years, primarily about prostate cancer issues. When I was at Tripler, I participated in the Journal Club. To continue to stay up-to-date in medicine, I read the monthly Journal of Urology. Also, my memberships in the American Urologic Association, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, and the Hawaii Urologic Society give me access to information and opportunities for continuing education.
I was attracted to the urology position at the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group because it included both general urology practice and urologic oncology. And because I was acquainted with the urologists and physician assistant in the department, I knew that I’d be working with a group of highly skilled professionals.
I strive to treat the whole person rather than just the specific diagnosis. The better I know my patients as individuals, the better I can meet their unique needs for connection and personal attention.
Cómo vivo bien
Physical activity has always been a big part of my life. Over the years I’ve enjoyed running, working out, and playing golf and tennis. Since having a hip replacement, though, I do more walking (with my dog and on the golf course), bike riding, and, now, doing yard work.
To stay mentally sharp, I play word games online and try to read every day. I especially enjoy hanging out on my lanai or at the beach with my family, chatting or reading.
