I was born in Nuremberg, Germany on an American Army base. When I was two years old, my family moved to Hawaii, where I grew up and graduated from Punahou School. After attending Wellesley College on the East Coast, I came home to earn my MD degree at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine. I completed my family practice internship and residency at Scottsdale Healthcare in Arizona, where I served as chief resident. I then did my sports medicine fellowship with the University of California at Davis/University of California at Berkeley Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.
After working at UC Davis for a number of years, I came back to Hawaii to become the Head Team Physician for the University of Hawaii Athletics Department. I stood on the sideline for every UH football game—home and away—for five years! I was also in charge of the health, wellness, and injury care for all UH athletes as well as supervising the UH athletics training room and staff.
Both of my parents are retired physicians—one from family practice and one from anesthesiology—so a medical career was a familiar path for me to take. Health, wellness and exercise are so important in a world consumed by stress, electronic noise, and other distractions. Exercise can help keep people both healthy and joyful, and I’m honored to be able to help people stay active.
At annual conferences of the Hawaii Academy of Family Physicians I’ve spoken on concussion management, joint injection, and exercise prescription, as well as teaching the splinting and casting workshop. My research on the use of intravenous hyperhydration by college teams was published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine Brief Report.
To stay current in my field, I attend annual meetings of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, read family practice and sports medicine journals, and consult with my colleagues. I’m a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, and a board member of the Hawaii Academy of Family Physicians.
I was happy to join the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group to be able to focus on patients and their concerns. When meeting with my patients, I listen carefully to determine what’s most important to them and to devise treatment plans accordingly. Sometimes the best medicine for an injury is simply to rest, while others may require specific medical treatments.
To stay fit, I walk, hike, jog, do yoga, go swimming, and run after my kids at soccer and tennis practice. My husband is an avid tennis player and coach, and I sometimes join him on the tennis court. To relax and unwind, I do therapeutic baking of chocolate desserts, hang out with family and friends, read, knit, and quilt.
