I was born in Brooklyn, New York, where my father was stationed as a physician in the U.S. Army. His service brought me to Hawaii as a middle school student. I then graduated from Moanalua High School, just a few blocks from my current office at Mapunapuna.I am a proud mother of twins, a girl and a boy. My husband is also a physician, specializing in pediatric emergency medicine.
I was inspired to go into medicine by my father's service to others as a career U.S. Army physician. The excellent teachers in the sciences here in Hawaii and at college were another important influence. They helped me identify early on that a career in service to others would fulfill me. As the first skin cancer specialist and cosmetic dermatologist in the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG), I am able to combine the surgical aspects of care with a broad understanding of medical illness that leads to skin conditions. I specialize in Mohs surgery, which combines outpatient surgery without general anesthesia risks and with minimal scarring and skin loss. My goal is to combine state-of-the-art care to cure skin cancer with the smallest possible physical scar and emotional impact on the patient. The beauty of Mohs surgery is that it achieves consistent cancer cures, often in a single day. As a member of the Aesthetic Services Department, I also enjoy engaging my patients in a dialogue that allows me to understand their goals, and provide cosmetic services to enhance their lives outside of purely medical concerns. I enjoy the collaborative environment of practicing with a group of physicians and nurses who share the goal of providing high-quality, patient-centered care. I am proud to be part of an organization that focuses on the overall health of the patient. I am a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery, and also serve as chief of Mohs surgery and cosmetic dermatology for HPMG. I provide skin cancer screening services and sun protection education to the public through events such as the Great Aloha Run expo, and through public radio and local television news programs.I have presented at several meetings including the American College of Mohs Surgery annual meeting on advanced closure techniques for skin-cancer incisions.
I look forward to any minute I can get with my twins, who energize me and keep me focused and laughing. I enjoy the beauty of paradise in Hawaii (with plenty of sun protection) by running with good friends, heading to the beach with family, and hiking and trail-running in the mountains. At the end of the day, I like sampling my husband’s cooking and unwinding with a good movie or TV show. Above all else, I value spending time with my family.
