Acerca de mí
I was born in Austin, Texas and raised in Nebraska. My uncle was one of the 'old time' family practitioners here in Honolulu, and he encouraged me to go into medicine. I followed his footsteps to Creighton University, then back to Hawaii in 2000 for residency training. My father, a pastor and teacher, also helped me realize my calling was to help others heal. He inspired my passion for teaching through showing me the importance of passing on knowledge to others. Family members who were involved in coaching sports in Hawaii also influenced my decision to specialize in sports medicine and surgery.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
Because I was interested in math, engineering, and science but also enjoyed working with people, a medical career was a good fit for me. Through surgery, I am able to apply my “engineering” skills, and also get to take care of people and help heal them. I find it very satisfying to work with my hands to build and repair things. I also enjoy working with and taking care of athletes, and seeing people get better in a relatively short period of time. At the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group, I am able to bring cutting-edge surgeries and techniques to the operating room. Our medical group also gives me the ability to do the right surgery for the right reasons. In addition to collaborating with the excellent specialized colleagues in my department, I partner with each of my patients to help them choose the best care options.I completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Iowa and am a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. I presented on the osteotomies of the knee during grand rounds, and on shoulder history and physical exam at the Occupational Medicine Conference. At the University of Iowa, I have given multiple sports medicine talks. In recent years, I have written articles for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and elsewhere. I co-authored a book chapter in “Complications in Knee and Shoulder Surgery: Management and Treatment Options for the Sports Medicine Orthopedist.”
Cómo vivo bien
In addition to enjoying common hobbies and interests, I enjoy seeing my patients get better! For exercise, I like to surf, kitesurf, and ride my mountain bike. I also look forward to traveling and spending time with wife, family, and new baby daughter.
