I was raised in Pearl City, Hawaii. After attending the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, I completed residency and primary care sports medicine fellowship at MacNeal Hospital in Illinois. Following training, I returned home to serve the community that shaped me.
My experiences volunteering in a physical therapy department at Kaiser Permanente, providing services for students with disabilities at Northwestern University, and working as a pediatric asthma research assistant in Hawaii influenced my decision to become a physician. I enjoy the diagnostic challenges in the medical profession, the opportunity to educate patients and families, and the ability to help people recover and maintain their health. In medical school I enjoyed working with patients of various ages, seeing them in the context of their entire families, and integrating care across specialties. I also enjoy working with my hands and performing in-office procedures. These interests naturally led to a career in family medicine. Further, my experiences as an athlete and coach made me aware that movement and sports play a large part in all that we do, and this inspired me to pursue additional training in primary care sports medicine. My professional affiliations include membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Association. In addition, I completed the MacNeal Sports Medicine Fellowship and received a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. To keep up with the most up-to-date medical research, I attend educational conferences, subscribe to several journals, and receive updates by newsletter. At the 2013 annual meeting of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine I presented "The Shaking Runner: A Medical Tent Rarity." Research papers that I have co-authored address asthma treatment for children, effects of secondhand smoke on asthmatic children, asthmatic children with repeat emergency department visits, and compliance with asthma care guidelines. The Hawaii Permanente Medical Group fosters a collegial environment and enables me to deliver high quality care to my patients. I aspire to coach my patients to recover and to maintain their health so that they may contribute to their teams at home, at school or work, and in the community. I enjoy watching patients grow and change over time. It is also rewarding for me to assist patients in understanding available treatment options so that they may make the most informed choices for their health care.
Walking, gardening, fishing, and spending time with family, friends, and pets all help me stay balanced and healthy. In my leisure time I also enjoy crafts, watching sports, reading, and traveling.
