I was born and raised in Kerman, California, a small farming community near Fresno. As an undergraduate at the University of California, Irvine, I had many dorm mates from Hawaii. When I visited them on Oahu and experienced the aloha spirit firsthand, I was smitten by the people, the culture, the food, and the natural beauty of Hawaii. I was so taken, in fact, that I became president of the college’s Hawaii club! My wife is from Kaneohe, and we were thrilled to make our home in the Islands, where our children could be closer to their many relatives here.
While playing football in high school, I tore a ligament that required surgical repair. My experience as a patient made me aware of the impact that physicians can have on the lives of others. The quality care that I received from the orthopedics team was a major influence on my decision to become a physician. In medical school I was attracted to aspects of various specialties, including the continuity that primary care physicians have with their patients. However, after completing a rotation in ophthalmology, I knew I had found my future career. This field provides a balance between caring for patients in the clinic and performing surgery, both of which are very satisfying to me.I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. I am also certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. At Kaiser Permanente Fresno I lectured at continuing medical education conferences, and I published a paper titled “Absorption of Fluorescein under the upper eyelids.” To stay on the cutting edge of my profession, I attend the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting in addition to meetings of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. I decided to join the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group because of the high quality of care it provides. Its physicians have trained at some of the best institutions in the world, and there is a very collegial atmosphere here.My philosophy of care is to treat all of my patients as if they were my own family. I also want to be able to offer them the most advanced and effective treatment options. Learning what their interests and activities are helps me bond with them and allows me to help guide their treatment plan.
I am a firm believer in exercise as medicine. To stay fit and to relax, I enjoy bicycling, swimming, and kayaking. I try to exercise at least an hour a day during the week and longer on the weekend. I also enjoy supporting my children’s extracurricular activities. I’ve served as a Cub Scout Cubmaster, a coach for the First Lego League Robotics Team, and a coach for their school’s Destination Imagination Team.
