Acerca de mí
I was born and raised on Oahu and grew up with divorced parents who lived in Manoa and Kailua. I attended Punahou School and then went away to the University of Iowa to obtain my Bachelor of Science. Next, I went to Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Illinois for my medical training. While there, I did an internship in internal medicine, a residency in neurology, and a fellowship in neuromuscular medicine. In residency I was named Resident Teacher of the Year, and I’m now board certified in neurology. I always intended to return to Hawaii after completing my education and am happy to be home.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
My choice of career was initially driven by watching my grandparents age and suffer from dementia and effects of a stroke. This gave me a desire to understand the disease process and do what I could to help others in these deteriorating situations. When I studied biomedical engineering in college, I was further fascinated by the complexity of the human body. I chose neurology for my specialty because, in that field, we deal with how humans understand and interact with their environment, the way we think and move, and other complex questions. My interests include myasthenia gravis, ALS, epilepsy, headache, and neuropathy.
At an American Academy of Neurology meeting, I gave a presentation on a rare inherited neurological disorder. I also spoke at the annual Academic Surgical Congress about healing wounds using an innovative computer model.
To keep up with research in my field, I read the journal Neurology, attend professional conferences, access online resources, participate in continuing education programs, and consult experts in different specialties. My professional association, the American Academy of Neurology, also keeps me informed on advances and developments in neurology.
I decided to join the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group because of the excellence of its physicians and providers and its patient-centered mission. I also appreciate being able to focus solely on providing care to my patients.
Teamwork and trust are essential in the patient-doctor relationship. Knowledge is power and so I like to spend as much time as it takes educating my patients about their conditions and what they can expect. The more they know, the more their concerns can be eased, even if their prognosis may not be the best.
Cómo vivo bien
To stay healthy physically, I like to play tennis, ultimate frisbee, golf, go to the beach, and enjoy ocean activities. To stay healthy mentally, I ensure that I take some time each day to focus on myself. Outside of the clinic I enjoy cooking, reading, chess, and playing board games with friends.
