Welcome to the Kaiser Permanente family! I believe you have chosen one of the most connected health care systems in the world. Our organization has pioneered the delivery of high-quality accessible health care for more than 60 years, and I am proud to have been part of it. I hope your relationship with Kaiser Permanente will help you and your family stay well.
I have been a physician with Kaiser Permanente since 1978. For those years, I have had the privilege of practicing in an organization that prides itself on delivering the highest quality medicine possible, with attention to detail and service. I was raised in the San Diego area, attended college at UC San Diego, and medical school at UC San Francisco, where I was elected to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. My post-graduate training was at UCSD in internal medicine. I am certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and had an office practice in primary care for 18 years. For the past 17 years, my clinical practice has been hospital-based. I also have had the privilege of being selected as an assistant area medical director for hospital services and, more recently, Physican Director for Quality and Patient Safety. In these positions, I feel I have made a difference in the quality and service we provide to our members.
I trained as a general internist. My current practice is limited to the hospital, where I care for patients admitted from the clinic or through the emergency department. I find great satisfaction taking care of our sickest patients and the close association with specialists in that setting. Having practiced in the clinic setting for 18 years, I am very aware of the interface between the hospital and clinic and the need for good communication between the two to provide optimal medical care.
I strongly believe staying healthy is a joint venture between you and your caregivers. Listening to your body and getting regular health risk assessments are crucial. Following medical advice and making sound decisions about your diet and potential health hazards is also vital. Another important component is regular exercise at least three to four times per week. Personally, I love to cycle.
