Welcome to my Web page! I'm very excited that you have the opportunity to meet me this way, as part of the Kaiser Permanente online experience. As you may already know, we have terrific online tools that members can access on this website. You may email my office (we love that!) and do a lot of other timesaving things as well.
I grew up in Orange County, where my father was a physician at Hoag Hospital. Our dinnertime conversations were often about medicine, which fascinated me (but grossed out my sister!) and planted the seeds for my eventual career. I went to Stanford University for my undergraduate degree, which was, beyond my family, the greatest influence on my life. I met people from many different countries and had the opportunity to learn about cultures that were very different from my own. Stanford also gave me the gift of believing that I could influence the world and it also gave me the tools to do so, which is remarkably powerful.
I was taught that patients will tell you what they have if you listen carefully enough. While there are certainly exceptions to this, I believe it is true that a thorough physical exam and knowledge of the patient's medical history will lead me toward the right diagnosis. I also try and understand what members really need instead of automatically prescribing drugs. Sometimes, people just need to be reassured that what they are experiencing isn't serious. But when they do need medications, I am very respectful that all medications have side effects and risks, and I weigh those risks and benefits with my patients before sending them out of my office with a prescription.
I think exercise is important for living well, both physically and emotionally. I row crew for my exercise and find that I really need this time to recharge myself. I get up very early on Saturdays and Sundays and am often on the water as the sun is rising. Except for my fellow rowers, the world is still asleep, and I can appreciate the serenity and beauty of the world as I fall into the rhythm of my strokes. A rowing shell is long and slender, and I sit only a few inches above the water, which has the added benefit of allowing me to feel like a participant of the silent world I am rowing through, instead of an observer. This is my way of relieving stress and creating a healthy life for myself.
