Acerca de mí
Hello, and welcome to my Web page! I am Steve Aguilar, a psychiatrist with Kaiser Permanente. Sometimes finding the right doctor who you connect with and who works well with you can be the most challenging part of the process. I hope this introduction and getting to know a little about me will make the process a little more inviting for you.
I am a Southern California native, and I grew up in Long Beach. My interests are many, and life has taken me down many paths, ultimately leading me to the practice of medicine and psychiatry today. I was drawn to psychiatry for many reasons: I get to study the most fascinating organ in our body (the brain), and I am constantly challenged and learning new ways of how the body and the mind interact. Most importantly, I love what I do because I get to spend my days connecting with people, getting to know and to understand them, and helping them find balance and resolution in their lives.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
I have many varied areas of interest and advanced study within psychiatry. I am bilingual in Spanish and I have worked closely with Hispanic communities advocating and advancing physical and mental health and well being during my career. I have also worked closely with LGBTQ patients, and I take pride in having spent the last several years developing skills to continue to serve the diverse and specific needs of this community. Another area of focus in my practice is reproductive mental health, treating women with psychiatric symptoms during pregnancy and in the postpartum period, while breastfeeding, across the menstrual cycle, and into menopause. I have advanced training in many psychotherapies including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, supportive psychotherapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy, and I incorporate these therapies into my care extensively. I complement these therapies by working diligently to find the right medication to ensure the people I work with get the most out of their care. Additional areas of emphasis in my practice include management of chronic pain, treatment-resistant mood disorders, substance use disorders and autistic spectrum disorders.
Cómo vivo bien
I do my best to try to find balance in my life. I find that achieving balance is one of the best ways for our bodies, minds and spirits to continue to thrive. I do this by spending time with my family and loved ones, running and exercising as often as I can, enjoying music (both listening and creating), being at the beach, and learning new ways to improve myself.
