Acerca de mí
Hello! I practice both internal medicine and addiction medicine. I am now more than 30 years into my practice, and while my children may irreverently admonish me that I am getting "old," I prefer the more politically correct appellations of "mature" or "seasoned." Now, after more than a quarter-century in medicine, my internal medicine practice is primarily geriatrics; however, my addiction practice consists primarily of young adults. I love what I do and even over all these years have never had even a nanosecond of regret about my career choice.
I was born in Chicago and raised in Southern California. I was the first in my family to enter medicine, or for that matter to even finish college. For some reason I have always had a passion for social causes, and this was probably the genesis of my interest in medicine. There is indeed a medical explanation for the satisfaction we derive from helping others, so there might be a little bit of selfishness in our choices. Recent studies confirm that the good feeling we get from "giving" or assisting others is from the release of those "feel-good" brain chemicals. These are very similar to the good brain transmitters released by exercise or even laughter. What Winston Churchill once said is certainly true: "We make a living from what we get, but we make a life from what we give."
Acerca de mi práctica médica
I have to say that I believe my style of practice has changed very little over the years. I believe that listening is one of the key ingredients to patient satisfaction. I address medical issues with patients in a very simple, straightforward manner, and as much as possible I try to personally return every patient's call to my office.
Cómo vivo bien
To help keep my sanity, I have a variety of hobbies and activities. I jog several miles several times weekly. I am a woodworker and build furniture (desks, tables, and bookcases) and also do some home remodeling. The construction skills have come in handy, as on many occasions in the past my daughters and I have visited Mexico with a church group and assisted in the construction of some modest homes for impoverished citizens.
