Welcome to my Web page. If you’re looking at this page, you’ve had or are contemplating having surgery. I hope the information here will help ease some of the anxiety you have about this process.
I’m originally from Philadelphia—I miss the cheesesteaks, but not the weather. I’m a huge Eagles fan. The oldest of four girls, I come from a family of strong women. My mother died of breast cancer when I was in residency. I know that time in our lives is limited, and this has colored my practice and my life. I believe a physician’s job is to be an advocate for the health of our communities and our members—including people with HIV, and the underserved. I am one of the founders and on the board of directors of the National Physicians Alliance (NPA). The NPA is an organization founded to restore physicians’ primary emphasis on the core values of our profession—service, integrity, and advocacy. I’m exceedingly lucky to be able to express my passion as an advocate at both Kaiser Permanente and the NPA.
I love being a surgeon because, in these days of high-tech everything, it’s still a field where we diagnose and treat people by touching, looking, and listening. No matter how big or how small a procedure is, most people are worried and vulnerable when they enter the operating room. This makes the bond and trust between surgeon and member very intense and special. I think I have the best job on the planet.
I constantly try to push my own limits, go to new places, and try new things. To this end, I’m trying to travel to a new country each year. As I enter my 50s, I’ve recommitted to exercising and controlling my weight. I have learned to swim and try to go to the pool at least once a week. Moving to the West Coast has helped me realize that I was probably a fish in a previous life. There is no place I am calmer and more at peace than on the beach. The perfect evening for me is to be with a good friend, sharing an excellent cabernet, with the music of Steely Dan playing in the background, and a sunset over the ocean.
