Acerca de mí
Welcome to my Web page. This page is my opportunity to introduce myself to members. If it makes just one person more comfortable about seeing a psychiatrist for the first time, then it’s a good idea.
Born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, I have an extended family, many of whom are doctors. My father was an accomplished psychiatrist, so I’ve always been comfortable with concepts in this field. After a brief stint working in emergency medicine, I trained in psychiatry and practiced for a few years in Trinidad before moving to California to join my husband. Although immigrating meant repeating much of my psychiatry training, I was able to enjoy it even more the second time. Every day in my work, I meet people who struggle with major obstacles in their lives, and I’m constantly reminded how very fortunate I’ve been in my own life.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
Psychiatry is a unique field, in which the doctor-member relationship is central, and two-way trust is essential for treatment success. I have a relaxed but direct interaction style, enabling me to get to know my members as individuals. I have a strong belief in the bio-psycho-social model of how disease is caused, and I’ve seen the importance of using many approaches in treatment, including psychotherapy groups, family support, spiritual faith, mindfulness meditation, and nature. Psychiatric medications are important tools, but not stand-alone cures. Recovery in psychiatry always involves more than just taking a pill. My areas of special interest include integrated care, mood disorders, and cultural psychiatry.
Cómo vivo bien
Staying connected to my family and sharing my life with my two Tibetan Spaniels are my personal secrets to living well. My hobbies include dog training, travel, and marine aquariums. My faith gives me a foundation from which to be thankful for success and rebound from loss. The opportunity to positively impact people’s lives by restoring mental health is a privilege for which I’m extremely grateful.
