Hello, and welcome to my Web page. I am Dr. Shah. As a child psychiatrist in the Behavioral Health Department at Kaiser Permanente Lancaster Medical Offices, I work with children, teens, and their parents to try and uncover the root causes of emotional and behavioral issues. The first step in this process is being able to connect with the child, so I need to do my homework. I watch cartoons, play video games, and get inside their world, so I can relate on their level. With younger children, we may even have floor time together and explore my toy box. Either way, I am likely to start the session by interacting with the child first. The objective of such exercises is to build a bond between member and physician. By doing so, we’ve opened a door and, hopefully, will be able to shed new light on problems.
I like to tell people that psychiatry is a genetic defect in my family. My dad, older brother, and a nephew are all psychiatrist. I received my medical degree from Gujarat University School of Medicine in India. My psychiatric training came from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and I completed my residency and fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry there. A fellowship in consult-liaison psychiatry at the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY followed that. While I’ve worked in both public health and private practice, for me, Kaiser Permanente is the best place to work. Our department remains a part of the general medical community and we interact frequently with doctors in many specialties. This helps me stay grounded and gives me the confidence of knowing there is a team behind me. I’ve been practicing here since 2008.
The mind, that ethereal home of conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings, is still largely a mystery. To be successful in my field, you need to be more than a scientist. You need to be an artist, a sociologist and a keen observer—almost a detective. In order to successfully connect with my members, I need to be able to explore many areas and uncover unexpected things. That is what I find most intriguing about my chosen field. I learn something new every day.
Both my wife and I practice with Kaiser Permanente in the Antelope Valley. She is a pediatrician at the Palmdale office. With busy professional schedules it is sometimes difficult to sync up, but we do our best to get away on vacations and add a few more miles to our frequent flyer program. Italy and India are two of our favorite destinations. Personally, I am a movie fanatic. I love watching movies, analyzing movies, and writing about movies. It is my one true obsession, and I firmly refuse to seek treatment for it!
