About Me

Although I was born in England while my father was stationed there with the United States Air Force, I have strong family ties to South Carolina and spent most of my youth there, as well as college and medical school. My wife and I met in Charleston at an art gallery, and soon after we married, we ventured to the Bay Area for my surgical training. It was there that our son was born. My brother had lived in Portland for many years, and we had always enjoyed visiting his family in Oregon. Thus, Salem felt like the perfect place for us to relocate. Since moving to Oregon, we have been blessed with a daughter and a goldendoodle.

About my practice

As a specialist in general surgery, my broad practice includes treating cancer and other conditions of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small bowel, large bowel, anus, and gallbladder), including abdominal wall hernias, skin and soft tissue lesions and masses, breast disease, and acute care (urgent) surgery. My experience and practice includes minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic surgery), and my aim is to attempt to apply minimally invasive techniques when appropriate. As an administor, I have had many leadership roles within Northwest Permanente and at Salem Hospital. These have included Chief Surgical Officer of the Mid-Valley, Chief of Staff of the Skyline Ambulatory Surgery Center, and Section Chief of General Surgery at Salem Hospital.

How I thrive

As a Kaiser Permanente member for many years, I appreciate this organization's promotion of mental, physical, and spiritual health. Salem has been an enriching community for my family. My wife has a background in art history, and we particularly enjoy all of the wonderful arts the Salem area offers, including the galleries downtown and the annual art festival. For exercise, I enjoy moderate weight training, hiking with my family, fishing with my son, walking my dog, and playing tennis. Though not a vegetarian, I try to eat a whole-food, plant-slant diet — 90-95 percent plant-based foods — and avoid processed items.
