I was born in Japan and lived there until I was in the fifth grade. My family then moved to Southern California, where I grew up. I attended medical school at the University of Chicago and did my internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Before moving to Hawaii with my husband in pursuit of a more relaxed, ocean-oriented lifestyle, I worked with The Permanente Medical Group in the San Francisco area for 15 years. I’m very proud of my family, who’ve inspired me in so many ways.
I knew I wanted a career that would be helpful to the people of my community and to society at large. I’ve always been interested in biology, and a career in medicine seemed like a good way to combine that interest with my desire to serve. The broad perspective on health and illness and the intellectual rigor required of a general internist were challenges that I welcomed.
To stay up-to-date in medicine, I attend conferences and use online tools such as UpToDate. I also read medical journals, especially the publications of my professional associations – the Americans College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.
The Hawaii Permanente Medical Group emphasizes disease prevention, which is my own preferred approach to medical care. Also, the excellent support services here allow me to focus on my work as a physician without having to spend time on the business aspects of a medical practice.
My approach to medicine is to encourage healthy lifestyle choices, and I believe strongly in the maxim "first, do no harm." Each one of us has the power to make positive changes in our health. Whenever possible, I opt for non-invasive therapies, such as physical therapy, and I try to minimize the use of controlled substances such as narcotics and benzodiazepines.
Listening is critical when I’m with my patients, and it’s what I enjoy most. It's important to me to take time to hear about and understand their views and concerns, and I apologize in advance if we’re unable to address all their issues in our first visit.
I try not to strive for perfection and to accept my own limitations. For my physical health I exercise every week and enjoy bicycling. For my emotional and mental wellness I read non-medical books and stay connected with family, friends, and nature. Most of all I enjoy being with my husband and our three wonderful doggies, whether walking or hanging out ocean-side.
