About Me
I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and went to Johns Hopkins University. I considered several career paths, including journalism and linguistics, but finally decided on pursuing a degree in medicine. It allowed a choice of many ways to make a difference. In my first year of medical school at Tulane University in New Orleans, we did one month solid of nothing but Neurology in the middle of the year, and I was smitten. I loved the logic, beauty, and mystery of the nervous system. I worked in the private practice medical world for 19 years, the first year in New Orleans and the rest back in the mid-Atlantic region in Virginia Beach. While I always enjoyed seeing the patients and practicing Neurology, I was not keen on running what amounted to a small business. Also, I did not think the traditional economics of private practice medicine were right for most patients. I decided I wanted a change in setting and answered an ad in a Neurology journal for a job at Kaiser Permanente in Portland.
About my practice
I am a general neurologist and enjoy seeing the full spectrum of Neurology patients. I have some special interest in seizure disorders, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and dementia. As I take the history, I try to learn something about the patient as a person, and I try to involve the patient in medical decision making. Working in medicine constantly reminds me that there is tremendous variation among people in every imaginable way, and I think knowing a little about a patient's hopes and fears significantly improves care. No medical system is perfect, but I love the Kaiser system, where I have great colleagues to bounce cases off of, where there is no financial motive for individual providers, where the whole system is not for profit, and where I can concentrate purely on medicine and leave the non-medicine side of things to others.
How I thrive
I have lived in the Portland area since 2002. I absolutely love the natural surroundings and the city itself. I feel just living here helps me thrive. I do enjoy day hiking, sometimes in the Gorge, occasionally at the Coast. My kids are both in their 20's now, and getting together with either of them always helps my thrive quotient.
