About Me
Hello! I'm glad to have this opportunity to present my credentials and share other information about myself. It's very important that you feel comfortable with your personal physician, and I hope this Web page will help you start to get to know me.
Biography
I'm a native of Southern California, but I've traveled extensively and have lived and trained in Sweden. I was very fortunate to attend medical school at Uppsala University in Sweden and continue my training in Uppsala and through the Karolinska Institute. I subsequently earned my specialty in internal medicine at UC San Diego and the Scripps Clinic San Diego. Later, I did my subspecialty training in gastroenterology and, finally, in transplant hepatology at the Scripps Clinic. To learn more about conducting clinical research, I studied epidemiology and statistics and earned my Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from San Diego State University. I have published numerous papers and given many presentations at national and international meetings.
About my practice
I specialize in hepatology (liver diseases) and liver transplantation. We have a very active hepatology research unit where we provide highly advanced therapies and treatments. We take a team approach in the hepatology research unit, with extraordinary nurses and investigators all working together to offer high-quality care. This teamwork has resulted in numerous publications in the field of hepatology. I also work very closely with the liver transplant team, and I'm the chair of Kaiser Permanente's National Transplant Network liver subcommittee. I'm on the executive board of the San Diego chapter of the American Liver Foundation and I serve on the medical advisory committee for the National Transplant Services. I was a finalist for the San Diego Business Journal Health Hero of the Year award in 2006. I have been named a "Top Doc" in San Diego several times. In addition, I was the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Internist of the Year in 2016 and Kaiser Permanente Partner of the Year in 2017.
How I thrive
I'm married and have 4 children. We enjoy traveling, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and other outdoor activities. My family is my highest priority, and we really have fun together. To maintain both inner strength and physical fitness, I practice martial arts: kung fu and tai chi.
