I decided I wanted to be a doctor at the age of six. My mother was expecting my sister at the time, and she would take me with her to her obstetric visits. Hearing my sister's heartbeat amazing and sparked my interest in medicine. My newborn sister became my first patient. I would put bandages on her, and to my parents' dismay, give her candy as medicine. Unfortunately for my sister, she received a checkup almost every day. The idea that one could actually make sick people feel better was inspiring and I carried that idea with me throughout my childhood. I grew up in a close-knit community in Macon, "the heart of Georgia." Everyone from my parents to teachers encouraged me to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor. I did not complete the goal alone, but had lots of help and support along the way. After graduating from high school, I attend Xavier University of Louisiana. Although I was far from home, my support system was still there, keeping me going with care packages and letters of support. I was elated to be accepted into Emory University School of Medicine.
My practice philosophy is a team approach. I see myself connecting with parents and families to help ensure that each patient receives high-quality care. Educating families and allowing them to educate me is the highlight of my practice. Some of my best parenting advice has come from my families, and I use these tips in my practice as well as with my own child. My particular interests include ADHD and breastfeeding support. I also have a special interest in medical education, and I work with third year medical students in my office. I enjoy teaching, and my students also help "keep me on my toes."
Balancing career and motherhood can be challenging. At the end of the day, sometimes, you need a relaxing moment. I love to lace up my gym shoes and take a long walk with my daughter. We explore the neighborhood by taking new routes. It gives me a chance to get exercise as well as spend quality time with my daughter. I also love to dance. Occasionally, I will turn up the tunes and dance myself happy! Spending time with family and loved ones helps keep me in tune with what truly matters. I also am an avid reader. I will read almost anything and love to get lost in a good book. It is the fastest way to escape to a new place or experience a new adventure. My daughter loves books as well, and reading to her has become a new hobby.
