I was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta with my parents and my twin sister. I always had a genuine love for science, and I became interested in pursuing medicine after shadowing local physicians in my community. I graduated from medical school and completed my residency in Alabama. While in medical school, I met and married my wife, who is a pediatrician. After completing medical school and residency, I thought I had a pretty good wealth of knowledge in obstetrics and gynecology. However, after assisting my wife through three pregnancies and seeing what happens behind the scenes, life's experiences have given me valuable insight that I apply to patient care.
We have three energetic children that keep us busy with their activities. I like to refer to myself as a "mature" parent since we were a bit older than most when we had children. Balancing our family and practicing medicine is a challenge, but is also so fulfilling. I chose obstetrics and gynecology because it has the perfect blend of routine health maintenance, surgery and obstetrics. Also, women make most of the health care decisions for their families and it is a great avenue to educate our members and their immediate family on their health.
One of my favorite quotes is from a book written by Dr. Stephen Covey, "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." As a physician, I learn so much from my patients by being an effective listener. My goal with each member is that at the end of the visit, you will feel that I am genuine. It is also important that I take into consideration how other factors, both inside and outside of the health care spectrum, can affect decisions regarding treatment. Health care is complicated, and I make an effort with every visit to ensure my patients have a solid understanding of their health condition and the management plan.
I find managing obstetrics patients with "high-risk" health conditions to be extremely rewarding. Regarding management of patients with gynecological conditions, I believe that patients should be informed of all their possible treatment options. My general practice style is to use the least invasive approach to treatment and progress from there. I enjoy minimally invasive surgical procedures. Over the years, I have taken a special interest in managing patients with sexual dysfunction, a very challenging health condition.
Making my family happy makes me thrive. As long as I know they are doing well then everything else seems to fall in place.
For many years when I was growing up, my dad planted a large garden. I have given it a whirl myself, and I love gardening and landscaping. There is nothing more relaxing for me than getting covered with dirt in the yard. I also think I am reasonably handy. I will make an effort to fix just about anything, from a washer/dryer to an HVAC unit.
I will try to cook just about anything if it inspires me. I am a recipe follower though, so do not ask me to do anything a real chef can do like substituting ingredients when I am missing a key element for a recipe! I have a true love for the arts, though at times the Atlanta Symphony makes me so relaxed I wake up to the applause.
There is nothing more beautiful than the North Georgia Mountains in the fall. Each year my family goes apple picking. I am also a carnival junkie. One year we went to seven different carnivals in Metro Atlanta!
I am a terrible golf player. I only play with those who are not serious about the game. I also love playing kickball. Kicking that big red ball is not as easy as you think! And of course, I am a loyal Falcons fan. Rise up!
