Hi, I'm Dr. Richard Arnell. I’m the physician lead for surgical urgent care at the Orchard Medical Offices in Downey. If you have a sprain or a burn, if you need a boil opened and drained, or if you need a cut sewn up, then I am the man to see!
I grew up in Miami Beach, Florida across the street from the warm Atlantic Ocean. My mom told me I learned to swim before I could walk! An only child, I idolized my father, a remarkable solo practice Ob/Gyn who was well known for delivering "half the babies in Miami Beach." So it was only natural that I decided to pursue a career in medicine, but I decided to be a surgeon rather than an obstetrician. After attending both college and medical school at the University of Miami (go Canes!), I did my general surgery residency at the University of Missouri—Kansas City where I met my lovely wife. We decided to settle down in Southern California because she doesn't care for humidity and mosquitoes, and I can’t handle snow! My wife and I are very proud of our four wonderful children. We spend most of our non-working hours overly involved in their never-ending array of school and sports-related activities.
I like taking care of members and enjoy spending extra time teaching them. My philosophy is "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If you're nice to people, most of the time they'll respond in kind by being nice to you. Also, I think it's only natural for members to want to know exactly what’s going on with their own bodies. When I take my car in to get it repaired, I'm depending on the service consultant to explain clearly to me what the problem is. I feel that it’s very important as a physician to spend the extra time to explain in a clear, concise manner what my your medical issue is and what treatment options are available. Our Urgent Care facility is a very busy place, but it functions like a well-oiled machine. Our physicians, nurses, medical assistants, and receptionists work extremely well together as a team and we all strive to take care of you when you need us.
I think that the key to a successful life is attempting to strike the proper balance between one's spiritual life, family time, work, and sports. This balance is not always easy to achieve, but I do my best to maintain it. The work I do as a physician is very important to me, but I always try to make time for my family. We are very involved as a family with our church. My faith is an integral part of who I am as an individual. I’m also a strong believer in the adage, "Work hard, play hard!" My favorite leisure activities are playing basketball and softball with my kids, riding roller coasters with my son, swimming for exercise, and traveling with my family. I’m passionate about the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes football, UCLA Bruins football, Lakers basketball, and Chicago White Sox baseball.
