Welcome to my Web page. I am happy to have this chance to introduce myself to you and tell you about my work as a physician at Kaiser Permanente.
I am a board certified adult psychiatrist and have practiced for more than 25 years at Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center. I feel fortunate to be able to work at Kaiser Permanente, especially in these times of change in the practice of medicine in general and psychiatry in particular. I am an East Coast native. I came to California to follow close friends who moved here after college and medical school. I did my residency in psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In the process of raising my children, I found that Kaiser Permanente allowed me to have a good balance between my medical practice and my family life.
The Psychiatry Department at Woodland Hills uses a split-treatment model. Our therapists, who may be licensed clinical social workers or marriage and family therapists, as well as psychologists, generally provide psychotherapy. My practice is limited to adult psychiatry; predominately biological psychiatry. Because of the great progress in biological psychiatry, my focus is generally on accurate diagnosis and use of medication. Medication can be a very powerful tool in alleviating emotional suffering. It is quite rewarding to see people feel better. At the same time, we are fortunate to have a team of phone-advice nurses who can help if you develop side effects or feel you are not doing well. When you speak with the nurse, please let him or her know all your current medications, doses, and describe the problem you are having in detail. The nurse will give me the details and call back with my recommendations. The literature is clear: Exercise helps your mind stay young and your mood stay bright. Because of my training in behavioral therapy, I use reasoning to help deal with upsets when they come my way.
I enjoy science fiction, photography, and I am the family computer geek (on a limited basis.) I force myself to use my exercise machine at home at least three times a week. Prayer and religious life contribute to the well-being of my spirit as well as providing fellowship and community. Going to conferences and staying abreast of psychiatric literature keep my mind quite busy.
