Acerca de mí
Welcome! I never thought I would have my own Web page, but now that I do, well, here we go.
I was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia, and completed both undergraduate and medical school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. I did my family medicine residency at Halifax Health-Medical Center in Daytona, Florida. In 1986, I went right from my residency to Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. After six months at the Euclid Medical Offices, I spent a year and a half at the Garden Grove Medical Offices, and then moved to the Mission Viejo Medical Offices when they opened in 1988. In August of 2005, I began practicing in the Long-Term Care Dept—seeing folks at nursing homes, as well as doing house calls for hospice and palliative care.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
My practice is now based in my members’ homes or nursing homes. I also do palliative care consultations. I only see members who have been referred by their physicians to our Hospice and Palliative Care Program, or who reside in a skilled nursing facility. I work with a group of people who went into hospice and palliative work for all the right reasons. Hospice is the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. I found my 19 years in family medicine tremendously rewarding, but at this point, I think the family medicine work was really my preparation for the hospice work. It's like the old Kierkegaard saying, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” Other than my work with the Hospice and Palliative Care Program, I also teach residents and serve as an administrative faculty member for our Orange County family medicine residency. This helps keep me energized, and I feel that teaching helps to make me a better doctor.
Cómo vivo bien
Outside of work, I love photography—some of my work is proudly on display at my dentist’s office—as well as music. I love to go on long drives to national parks. My main exercise is on the treadmill. As I get older, I'm learning that sleep is a lot more important than I used to think it was.
