About Me

I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up in Houston, Texas. My wife, Dr. Theresa Devere, is a dermatologist with Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG). She grew up in Honolulu and expressed a desire to move back to Hawaii after living in Portland, Oregon for nine years. I have really enjoyed living in Hawaii, particularly the wonderful weather, friendly people, and being close to family. My wife and three children keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of family support in each of our patients.

About my practice

As a child I was inspired by my father’s passion and enthusiasm for helping his patients. He still practices neurology in Texas. When I decided to pursue a medical career, I realized early on that I preferred medical specialties that allowed me to spend time interacting with patients rather than performing surgery in an operating room. In medical school, a terrific neuroanatomy class drew me to my specialty. During my medical neurology rotation, I was amazed by the ability of the neurologist to use findings from the history and physical examination to figure out what part of the nervous system is affected. After finishing my neurology residency training at Washington University, I completed a fellowship in electromyography and neuromuscular disease. When I interact with patients, I want them to feel comfortable. I want to help my patients understand their diagnosis and participate in their medical decisions. My goal is to provide them with the same level of care and respect that I would want for my family members. It is a privilege to be able to practice neurology with the high-caliber physicians at HPMG. We genuinely care about our patients and each other, and our electronic medical records system enables us to coordinate care seamlessly. Our team approach allows us to focus on preventing illness, rather than waiting for it to occur. As an Assistant Clinical Professor in Medicine at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, I enjoy teaching neurology to medical students, residents, and geriatric fellows. I’m an active member of the Hawaii Neurological Society, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Association of Neuromuscular Disease and Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

How I thrive

My regular exercise routine consists of running, cycling and swimming, and I like taking out our kayak and paddleboards on the weekends. I also enjoy relaxing with family and friends outdoors in the evenings, and experiencing the amazing sunsets and tropical breezes. I love watching my children play soccer and basketball games on the weekends.
