About Me

I was born on the Big Island of Hawaii in a small town called Honokaa, but have resided on Maui for most of my life. My father was a teacher and always emphasized the importance of health and education not only in his profession but also at home with our family. I appreciated his lessons and am grateful he introduced me to the significance of physical wellness. My wife and I continue to live in Wailuku, Maui where we both grew up. We have a daughter living in Los Angeles who is learning that work after college is actually fun. We also have a daughter attending a college of podiatric medicine in Iowa and is finding out how difficult medical school really is.

About my practice

My interest in medicine was sparked by a local newspaper photo featuring Kaiser Permanente physicians standing happily with their surfboards at the original Ala Moana Medical Center in Waikiki. Once I read about their profession and the fact that they could surf and care for members in one day, I was convinced that this was my dream job. I attribute my decision to specialize in family medicine to a leading personal physician who I met during college. He professed that family medicine would be one of the most necessary medical specialties in the future and I thankfully acted on his assertion. Family medicine is a truly rewarding field and I am honored to be the department’s professional chief. I enjoy having the support of a team of physicians and medical staff within the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group. Together we strive for the same goal of providing high quality and coordinated care to improve the health and well-being of our members. My mother always told me to treat others as you would want to be treated. I follow her advice to this day and hope that my patients feel comfortable building relationships with me and letting me become a part of their family in helping to solve their health issues. I am a staunch advocate for high school athletic trainers and am board certified in sports medicine in addition to family medicine. I was driven to explore this area after sustaining a major injury playing football in high school. I am also a member of the physician leadership team that oversees Kaiser Permanente Hawaii’s implementation and management of electronic medical records to improve member care.

How I thrive

I find it important to make time for myself to stay physically and mentally healthy. I often run and surf, which helps clear my mind. I also love spending quality time with my wife, especially when we watch Korean dramas together.
