About Me

I was born and raised on Oahu and went to McKinley High School, where I first became interested in research. I continued my research through college at the University of Hawaii, and later at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. After medical school, I was fortunate to obtain my PhD degree in biomedical sciences. With my research background, pathology was a natural specialty for me. I always wanted to combine a career in research and clinical medicine, and am now grateful to have the opportunity to do both.

About my practice

The practice of pathology is in many ways akin to research because it involves problem solving, investigating interesting cases, and helping determine diagnoses. My specialty also appealed to me because it seemed to be a natural bridge between research and clinical medicine. Working alongside my colleagues at the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG), both local and nationally, is something I find very rewarding. I really enjoy collaborating with my colleagues with the goal of providing our members with high-quality, patient-centered care. I've also enjoyed working on quality and patient safety initiatives over the years. I have been fortunate to have served in several leadership roles at HPMG, including Chief of Pathology, Associate Medical Director of Ancillary Specialties, and Medical Director of the Center for Health Research, Hawaii. I am a member of several national pathology organizations including the College of American Pathologists (where I have served as a lead inspector for the college on several occasions), the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the American Association of Clinical Chemistry, and the Association for Molecular Pathology.

How I thrive

I believe in taking periodic breaks from my work, and these usually involve trips to the Mainland for educational meetings or for pleasure. Spending time with family and listening to country music also revitalize me. I enjoy watching sports events, going to country music concerts, and traveling. My favorite travel spots are Las Vegas and Nashville. I particularly look forward to attending the annual CMA Music Festival and going to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
