About Me

I was born in Hoolehua, Molokai. I moved to Maui with my family one year later and then to Oahu when I was 11 years old. My father worked for one of Hawaii’s oldest employers, the Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company on Maui, before working for the State for 20 years. My mother was a teacher and worked for the Department of Education for 35 years. I am a graduate of Kailua High School and the University of Hawaii. Upon completing my medical residency and fellowship in Denver, I returned to Maui in 1987 and have been working with the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group ever since. I have two great daughters who each keep me on my toes.

About my practice

My long-standing love of the biological sciences and my desire to help people influenced my decision to practice medicine. I am board certified in internal medicine and in allergy and clinical immunology. I feel lucky to be able to practice both fields at Kaiser Permanente. I serve as the clinic chief and internal medicine section chief at the Maui Lani clinic and also run our allergy clinic, where we do skin testing and immunotherapy for allergic rhinitis and asthma. My philosophy of care is to do no harm and treat patients like family. I have a high regard for my patients. Many have been with me for more than 20 years. I sincerely consider them friends and often wish we had more time to just "talk story." Having worked within the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group for so long, I value the camaraderie among my colleagues. Our physicians are an extremely diverse and gifted group. The combination of our combined talent and our electronic medical records makes it easier to provide high quality care for our family of patients. I am also grateful for our nursing and pharmacy partners because of our common goal of putting patients first. This helps to deliver consistent and coordinated care.

How I thrive

I stay healthy in a variety of ways. Each year I make it a goal to hike in Haleakala Crater. I also play tennis weekly with a foursome that I have known for 20 years; they keep me grounded and laughing. Simply being outdoors at home is relaxing and whenever possible, I enjoy boating, fishing and diving with good friends at Molokini and Kahoolawe. Experiences like these remind me of why I live in beautiful Hawaii.
