I was born and raised in Manoa Valley, the third of four children. Growing up, I loved walking with my grandmother to and from school every day. Over time, she became less agile and eventually passed away due to multiple complications of chronic diseases. My oldest brother died prematurely of cardiovascular disease, leaving me to wonder if I could influence the health and well-being of those I cared about. It also incited a passion to understand the nature of diseases, and to spend a lifetime improving the lives of those I have the privilege to serve.
During my residency in internal medicine, I discovered that the kidney is a complex and interesting organ with many potential manifestations of disease. The work was challenging and unending at times. However, I found it very satisfying to care for chronic kidney disease patients who are often faced with multiple complex disease states. These patients taught me the most and their remarkable spirit inspired me to specialize in nephrology. The relationships I have built with my patients over many years and through many life changes are both a joy and privilege. At the center of that relationship is shared decision-making, honesty, and respect. It is also about being able to serve the community in which I was raised and caring for the parents, siblings, children, and cousins of people I know.I have participated in various nephrology symposiums and conferences, both in Hawaii and internationally. I have presented on peritoneal dialysis, kidney disease, and integrated medical care systems, among other topics.I currently serve as the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group’s Associate Medical Director of Quality, and love practicing with our dedicated physicians and staff. I am a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the American College of Physicians, and Alpha Omega Alpha.
I keep myself physically and mentally healthy by spending time with my family. We like to go to the beach and hike. I am also a huge fan of the team sports my daughters play. Our family enjoys traveling and getting together with the extended family as much as we can.
