I was born and raised in Hubli, Karnataka State, India. My parents were my greatest inspiration. My father guided me to be a principled and good human being, and my mother stressed the importance of education. She, along with my teachers, motivated me to pursue a career as a physician. Thanks to all that encouragement, I went on to complete medical school, residency, and a fellowship in India. I later became a research fellow in cornea studies at the Yale School of Medicine. On my vacations to Hawaii I always felt at home in the wonderful climate and even more so with the friendly people of Honolulu.
In India I conducted free surgical eye camps for the rural poor. In the U.S. I have coached volunteers for Unite for Sight, a non-profit organization that provides support and resources for eye care to underprivileged communities worldwide.I presented numerous papers, posters, and surgical videos in ophthalmology in India. In the U.S. I have presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and at the New Haven county chapter of the American College of Physicians.I stay current in my field and in medicine generally by attending medical conferences sponsored by the Society of Hospital Medicine, by reading medical journals, and by participating in analyses of individual patient cases. In addition to English, I speak the Indian languages Kannada and Hindi. The Hawaii Permanente Medical Group was highly recommended to me by a personal friend who is a member of this practice. I took his advice to heart and determined that this was a place that I could be productive and helpful to the people of Hawaii. I feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity! The well-being and safety of patients always comes first for me, and I strive to deliver the best care that I possibly can. I believe patients appreciate and connect with a doctor who is friendly, courteous, and kind.
To stay physically healthy, I try to eat healthy foods and to exercise whenever possible. I rejuvenate my mind by traveling, cooking, playing golf, gardening, reading magazines, and watching movies. I am also looking forward to trying jet skiing!
