About Me

Welcome to my Web page. I am happy to have this chance to introduce myself to you and to tell you about my practice in the Dermatology Department at Kaiser Permanente’s Orchard Medical Offices in Downey.

Biography

I grew up in the small town of Hillsdale, Michigan (“Small Is Beautiful”), a grandson of farmers and a son of teachers. During my upbringing, I was given strong tonics of common sense, honesty, and hard work. My love of science, and particularly the application of science in caring for others, led me to dream about becoming a physician. As I went through medical school, I decided to become a dermatologist. I later developed a special interest in skin cancer treatment. Over the years, I trained and practiced in large and small groups in the Northeast and the Midwest. I also discovered my other important callings—husband and father—while training to become a physician. While I am dedicated to my work, I’m equally devoted to my wife and our 6 children.

About my practice

Joining Kaiser Permanente has allowed me to combine my dream practice with the needs of the Dermatology Department at the Orchard Medical Offices. We provide general dermatology, including consultation services for members of other physicians and Mohs micrographic surgery for members with high-risk skin cancers. All this requires teamwork between the clinic staff, administrators, and physicians. A crucial component of good medicine is good service. We at Kaiser Permanente work to create a culture of service within our practices and throughout the organization.

How I thrive

I try to stay healthy by engaging in all kinds of exercise—running, bicycling, weights, and yoga—and by eating the right foods at home and at work. I read a lot of audiobooks as an antidote to commuting, with special interests in anthropology, psychology, and, of course, medicine. I prosper when I’m at peace, and I hope to share that peace with everyone around me. To paraphrase Thich Hanh, we are peaceful if we are feeling well in our skin, we can demonstrate real peace, and we can raise our children well. I dream of a future when I can nurture public health and offer sustainable medical and skin care where there is dire need.
