I have lived in all corners of the United States, but have called the Northwest my home since the late 70's. I became a nurse and then later a nurse practitioner, while raising a family of four children and owning and managing a retail store with my husband, so life has always been busy at our house. Our children are grown now and my husband and I are now enjoying the arrival of grandchildren in to our lives. We have been involved with Kaiser Permanente for many years, as we chose Kaiser Permanente for our family and employees over 25 years ago, believing it offered the best and most diverse benefits for our family and work crew. A few years later I came to work for Kaiser Permanente, first as a Nurse in Infectious Diseases and the HIV clinic, and later as a Nurse Practitioner in Continuing Care in Geriatrics. I had the opportunity to go to Pakistan with Northwest Medical Teams after becoming an NP; in fact, I flew to Islamabad in the afternoon, after taking my national certification boards in the morning, and I first practiced medicine by flashlight in a tent in the foothills of the Himalayas!
I am ANCC board certified in both family practice NP and Gerontology NP. I work in skilled and long-term care facilities as part of a small Kaiser Permanente Continuing Care team comprised of an MD, me, and a nurse, providing medical care to Kaiser Permanente members in contracted facilities. We manage the post-hospital stays of many kinds of patients, concentrating on rehabilitation from problems ranging from cardiac and stroke to orthopedics, wounds, COPD, and diabetes. I love the diverse and complicated nature of the problems we encounter, and strive to find the best and most efficient strategies to get our patients safely home soon. I particularly appreciate having access to Kaiser Permanente's exceptional electronic medical record, which allows me to see the full medical history of each patient I care for, and the full support and ready expertise of my Kaiser colleagues, to help me sort out especially complicated medical problems. Most of our patients are older, and I enjoy getting to know them and their families, and value the wisdom and compassion their years have given them.
I really enjoy working out in the gym by myself, and hiking with my family. We all love good food, and when our family gets together, the house is full of good cooking, laughter, and wine. We always have a few large dogs underfoot, or lounging on the best seats on the couch. We live over a creek, up in the trees, out in the foothills, in the same house we raised our children in; it is filled with lots of color, photography, and art on the walls. My husband and I love to travel, and hope to do more, since we're no longer struggling with the kids' orthodontist and college bills. I thrive on learning new skills, and am hoping to increase my personal expertise in urgency care and emergency medicine, so that I can continue to do more international volunteer health work. I did have the pleasure of taking a great class in Global Health for Medical Professionals at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) last year, and am hoping to put what I learned into practice soon.
