Acerca de mí
My family roots are western, from British Columbia to California. Even when living elsewhere, we came back to the Cascades most summers, to "land you can look up at," as my mother said. As a child, I planned to be a poet, artist, and roller derby star. However, at a sixth-grade career fair, I was given a sticker that read "A Health Career Is Caring," and somehow that motto stuck. I got busy with home health care for 10 years, starting as a teenager — everything from helping new mothers nurse their babies, to assisting homebound elders at the end of life. As a community organizer, I worked for housing justice, mothers’ rights, a teachers' union, fair access to health care, and more. I went back to school as a single mother of three. My academic background is in psychology, sociology, and biochemistry, but my classrooms have also been forests, kitchens, streets, and clinics, where patients of all ages have often been my teachers.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
I’m a true believer in primary care, which is different from specialty care or urgent care. Primary care is long term, whole-person oriented, and integrated with other aspects of your wellness. Your primary care physician is the leader of your personal health-care team, often coordinating your care behind the scenes. When these elements are in place for individuals, they are healthier, and their communities are healthier, too. Family medicine is my calling; it is the only all-ages, all-genders primary care specialty. My approach to care is science-based, patient-centered, and high-touch. I see people of all ages, from babies to elders, for preventive wellness care, and I treat medical issues such as metabolic syndromes; hormonal imbalances; heart, lung, and circulation problems; digestive and urinary issues; problems with skin, hair, and nails; the effects of stress on sleep and mood; gender, sexuality, reproduction, and much more. You and your personal health-care team have the same goal: to build and support the health and strength that lets you work, play, and love.
Cómo vivo bien
On days off, you’ll find me wandering forests and mountains, or reading, knitting, and writing at home. I have written four cookbooks, two books of poetry, and several manifestos. I like to read memoirs, science fiction, and niche history. I love the hypnotic rhythm of knitting needles. These activities provide dynamic balance: a quiet mind in an active body, or a quiet body with an active mind. Most mornings start with yoga and meditation or prayer. If you've ever struggled to keep up healthful routines, I understand the challenge. Part of my job is to help keep you, and myself, committed to what's good for us. Family is my center. I'm married to a working artist and have three adult kids engaged in health and human services, and in art, music, gardens, and adventures. We have a large extended chosen family, and enjoy big, joyful, noisy gatherings as often as possible.
