Dónde ejerzo mi práctica médica
Acerca de mí
I was raised in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. A first-generation college student, I went to college close to home and studied philosophy, literature, and biology. After graduating I adventured overseas to live and work in Scotland until moving to Colorado for medical school. I also attended graduate school there but found that I enjoyed practicing medicine more than doing lab work. I also found it too sunny there and escaped to the Pacific Northwest for rain and for residency training. It is the greatest honor and privilege to practice medicine because I do feel that it is very hard if not impossible for a person to excel at their work and personal pursuits without health.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
I chose to practice ear/nose/throat surgery because I feel that many of the things that make us most human — the abilities to hear, see, speak, taste, smell, breathe — are centered in the head and neck, and I'm eager to help my patients preserve, and where possible, restore these. I enjoy the breadth of ENT practice in terms of the diseases I can treat, in terms of the treatments that I can recommend (medicine and/or surgery), and in terms of the patients with whom I can interact. I seek to empower my patients and in my opinion that includes ensuring that they understand what's going on and what their options are to improve their situation, taking into account their values. I'm fortunate to be able to practice at Kaiser Permanente, where I know that my colleagues share a similar philosophy.
Cómo vivo bien
Family and friends are most important to me, and I recharge by spending time with them. I greatly enjoy opportunities to boat, fish, water ski, and sit/play cards on my parents' front porch. My significant other and I are both proud Portlanders and love to jog or bike around PDX to the zoo, the Schnitz, or Providence Park but also take every opportunity to escape to the outdoors of Sauvie Island, the Coast, the Gorge, the Mountain, or the vineyards. And whenever we can, we escape to the Emerald City to check in on our godchildren. On the rare time it's raining too much to get outside, we launch into an epic chess or Settlers of Catan game with NPR or the BBC in the background. She's trying to teach me how to cook, but mostly I just dice the vegetables and load the dishwasher.
