Dónde ejerzo mi práctica médica
Acerca de mí
I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but raised in Princeton, New Jersey. After finishing boarding school in New England, I moved to Philadelphia for my undergraduate work, where, as a dedicated student of classical/jazz piano, I decided to pursue a degree in music composition and theory. Never wishing to be a professional musician, I ultimately chose to go to medical school, for it was a natural means of combining my love of the sciences and humanities. In medical school, I serendipitously discovered plastic surgery after applying for a job to help build a craniofacial database at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. I quickly fell in love with this truly unique specialty, as it allows me to work with my hands to develop novel and creative solutions to unique surgical challenges. After completing my plastic surgery residency, I moved to Seattle to pursue a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery, where I remained for 7 years as faculty at the University of Washington. I moved to Portland in the summer of 2019 to be close to my parents, who relocated to the area shortly after I started my fellowship.
Acerca de mi práctica médica
Though rarely affording the opportunity to save a patient's life, plastic surgery routinely affords me the opportunity to improve a patient's life. I firmly believe that there is no routine plastic surgery procedure, as each patient presents with a unique combination of impaired function and altered form, both of which I strive to restore. While I perform all general plastic surgery procedures, the bulk of my practice centers on cancer reconstruction, the majority of which is microsurgical, autologous breast reconstruction (DIEP, SIEA, TUG, SGAP/ IGAP, MS-TRAM). I particularly love working with breast cancer patients because their reconstructive journeys often require multiple procedures over the course of a year or more. I am thus granted a unique vantage, as I see my patient's progress from the fear and anxiety that often accompanies cancer diagnosis, through their treatment, to the ultimate joy and satisfaction they experience in completing their reconstructions. Because plastic surgery encompasses broad surgical principles that can be applied all over the body, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to collaborate with numerous surgical specialties in performing complex reconstructions of the abdomen, perineum, chest, and extremities as well.
Cómo vivo bien
I believe the most caring, compassionate, and effective physicians are those who strive to maintain balance between their personal and professional lives. When not in the hospital I enjoy playing tennis, hiking, biking, playing the piano, and, most importantly, spending quality time with family and friends. I particularly enjoy detailed-oriented home improvement projects such as tiling and painting.
