I was born and raised in Oregon. For the first 20 years of my career I worked as an electrical engineer. After our boys started school, my wife Bonny became a registered nurse and a certified nurse midwife, now also with Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. I was fascinated by what she was studying as I had had little life science in my engineering training. When I decided to pursue a new career, Bonny was my main inspiration to become a doctor. I returned to Oregon Health & Science University, where I received my medical degree and did my internal medicine residency.
After a long career in electrical engineering I was ready for a change. I wanted to leave a legacy that I could be proud of, to leave my community a little better than I found it. I kept returning to medicine as the best way to accomplish this. Internal medicine is sometimes called the cognitive specialty, because it requires the application of scientific knowledge and clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Being scientifically oriented, I enjoy this process immensely. Nothing is more satisfying to me than making a difficult diagnosis, initiating the proper therapy, and saying goodbye to a patient who is getting well and going home to their lives and families. My professional affiliations include membership in the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association. My primary method of staying abreast of current medical research is to read articles in the Annals of Internal Medicine and the New England Journal of Medicine. I also subscribe to the American College of Physicians Journal Club and participate in ongoing certification education. During my residency I had the opportunity to work at Kaiser Permanente in Oregon. I liked the integrated model of care, which provided easy access to medical records and specialist consultation. The Kaiser Permanente model also has focused for years on improved efficiency, cost effectiveness, and quality of care, which will be required of all health providers in the future. My philosophy of care is to deliver high quality medicine tailored to the values of the individual patient. It is also critical that patients feel that their physicians take the time to listen and to really hear them. Being sick can be frightening, and people want their doctors there to see them through.
I stay physically and mentally healthy by doing daily exercise, spending time with family, and going to the beach. I also enjoy hiking, sailing, amateur radio operating, and building furniture.
