I received my degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. I completed my internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center as well as a fellowship at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California.
At the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG), I am chief of the division of vascular therapy and Director of New Ventures. In recent years, I have served as co-chair of the organizing committee of the 9th Hawaii Vascular Symposium, and I moderated a session on peripheral vascular disease at the UCSF Vascular Symposium. At the Vascular Interventional Advances conference in Las Vegas, I was part of a team of HPMG vascular surgeons that performed cases via satellite for conference attendees. We had the privilege to share best practices for the care of patients with vascular disease, and to highlight the quality care Hawaii has to offer. We started a fellowship for doctors from other hospitals to improve their skills in minimally invasive vascular repair. We have a very busy clinical research program with several clinical trials going on at once. We publish two to four scientific research articles per year. I have also pulished a textbook in vascular surgery which is widely used in the U.S. and abroad. I serve on the editorial board of Vascular Disease Management, Annals of Vascular Surgery, and Endovascular Today. In recent years, I have been a visiting professor at Beijing University, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, the University of British Columbia, Oregon Health Sciences University, University of Kansas (McEwen Visiting Professorship), Boston University School of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, and elsewhere. I am board certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Society for Vascular Surgery, and the International Society of Vascular Surgery. I am a member of the Western Vascular Society, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the American Heart Association, the International Society for Endovascular Specialists, the Nafzigger Surgical Society, and the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association.
I enjoy being involved in my community in my free time. I was on the board of directors of Network Enterprises, a non-profit corporation that employs handicapped workers, and have also served as their Vice Chairman.
