I was born in the original Kaiser Permanente Hawaii hospital, Ala Moana Medical Center, in Waikiki, which has since been relocated to Moanalua. I am a proud father of four incredible children along with my wife, Dr. Jolene Bachman, an obstetrician/gynecologist physician also with the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group (HPMG).
I didn’t always know that I wanted to be a physician. Originally I considered a career in oceanography, but my skills were not aligned to that path. Instead, I applied to medical school, and upon being accepted, realized that this is what I wanted to do. My father became ill soon after and his unpleasant experiences with impersonal care profoundly impacted me. It was then that I understood the value of a human touch in care giving. Growing up, I had a wonderful pediatrician, Dr. Choan, and held various student jobs involving child care, such as being a camp counselor. These memories helped me to realize that specializing in pediatrics was a natural step for me. I enjoy inpatient pediatrics because it allows me to spend a little more time with my patients than in an outpatient setting. I connect with my patients through listening, humor and empathy, and my care philosophy is to put them and their families first. This is a concept I strongly believe in as the Patient Family-Centered Care lead at Moanalua Medical Center. As the chief of inpatient pediatrics, I can truly say that one of the biggest strengths in practicing with HPMG is our collegiality. When I am caring for a child, I can involve any number of specialists with a simple phone call. This coordination and support makes care delivery safe and efficient, and promotes a constant drive for excellence within our organization. My relationship with HPMG and Kaiser Permanente is long, personal and meaningful. In addition to being born at Kaiser Permanente and my wife working with HPMG, my father-in-law was also an HPMG Ob/Gyn physician. A few years ago, I visited Moanalua Medical Center for a Hep B test, when the nurses pulled my childhood medical record. There was a notation about my mother complaining about my temper tantrums, and I shared a good laugh about this with the nurses. For me, family and Kaiser Permanente are one in the same.
Spending time with my family keeps me thriving every day. To stay physically healthy, I enjoy running, surfing and paddling.
